Elbe Day

The chronicle of Torgau would be incomplete without its best-known image:
It was on the 25th of April 1945, when the 69th division of the US infantry and the 58th  Russian division met in Torgau.
They shook hands on the destroyed Elbe bridge and were looking forward to the near end of World War II. The famous handshake of Alexander Silwaschko and William Robertson was a symbol for the defeated Nazi Regime.
This noteworthy day - called Elbe Day - is celebrated year by year, always at a weekend around the 25th of April. This festival is an attraction to many tourists, especially because of the countless events during those days.
